Future Beats

Ok, so i spose that's a bit of a pretensious title for a post, but fuck it, these are some future beats in this post. Some are made a while ago, some recently, but they're all exhibiting a form of bass music that i think is gonna keep evolving.
I know i'm a little bit biasd, cause i love the bass, but i bassline fueled and focused music is taking over the club scene. I'm not trying to say it's never been there. I'm not gonna pretend that most big club tunes don't have either a massive kick drum or a thumping bass line, just they've never been this defined before, this prominant or this weird and interesting. What has really been intersting me as of late is the cross-relation of genres tho, and what new sounds we are seeing come about. Really the last 2 years especially have seen a big mash of genres, i mean no one can describe a song without the use of multiple sentences, and although that's annoying when writing flyers, it's dope when it comes to music. There's such a worldly influence these days on all sorts of music, mainly with the way music is distributed though the internet, and the ease of which there is to find new music, and it's affecting everyone from producers, to bands, to DJs to people with iPods, and it's changing everything up. On top of the fact that people have the internet to find stuff now, there is also a new generation of people who have grown up glued to the mass-media, and are all too savvy when it comes to being open to new things from the other side of the world, eyes are opend and ears are pricked up. Everything is influenced by everything. Big up to global awareness basically.
This formula is true to many, if not all new genres these days, yet i'm trying to focus it down a bit in this post to what i think are some really dope sounds that i'm starting to notice more and more, and i think will be even more prominent in 2008.

So, i'm gonna start it off with an artist i was first introduced to by detboi, when we featured his top 10 for december (i knew that segment was a good idea), and is none other than Moda's Andy George. His brand of beats so far seem to be on a fidgety, tech tip, but getting some nice shots of influence from grimey garage-style tunes. I feel like this style is getting a bit of an underground upsurgence, and i think the popularity, and nasty basslines of fidget house and dubstep style tunes are having a big part in it. Garage is making a big revival (helped a lot by Sinden & The Count of Monte Cristal, and more recently, through detboi), and it's bringing some speed and bounce into already upbeat tech music. I'm talking about a fat bass (often LFO) sound dominating, and being the focal point of the tune, with enuf fun and rythm in the drum beat to get your feet moving. But don't take me trying to describe a sound that i'm starting to feel in some tracks fool you into thinking that Andy George's tune sounds like anything else, they're definatelyindividual and fucken dope... You haveta make sure you check out Andy's debut EP release of "Big Dipper" for a bit more of an insight into what i'm talking about (i reckon the release will sit as one of my fav's for the year, i don't care if it's only january). You can grab it from Lee Mortimer's Warehouse Music, released with an awesome Hijack remix that i've mentioned before, at the end of January. Also look out for him remixing Bryan Cox, working with Scott Cooper and for a follow up EP to "Big Dipper"! But for now, check out his remix, with JakZ, of detboi's "Gunshot Lean Forward". Also get his latest mix, and an EP minimix, which i've had on constant repeat. It's only 20mb, and is hot as they come!
That name JakZ is one you won't be wanting to forget any time soon. He's managed to put out a bunch of fully fully sick releases, only problem is they all seem really hard to find. I'm def surprised he hasn't had more releases as well, since his synth work is awesome, and the way his beats move make my feet move and head slam. What's really getting me is his wild fidget sounding rave synths filled with bass rythm. Keep everything peeled, cause every release of his is a head trip! (he's also Christian Hoff under which he has more releases, but it's really the JakZ stuff that's blowing me away). For now, try checking his "Nightcrawlers Remix" available for download from his myspace, and listen for the awesome track "Far Out" in Andy's mixtapes (it's called the "sound of a loop da loop era" in his myspace player).

Dubstep, is obviously a seriously heavy bass genre obviously, hell, you need subs just to be able to listen to it propperly. Although most dubstep tracks are a little too dark and almost minimal for my likings, i love it's staple features. There's some nice LFO work, the bass is always big and dominating. I was a fan of Grime stuff, and still am, so got into dubstep, just never in a big way. Over the last year however, dubstep has gotten pretty damn big all around the world, and lots of producers can dig it because of the heavy focus on production - basically a dubstep track won't sound good unless you know what you're doing with dynamic effects (aka compressors, EQ etc). So i think that's paved the way for people to be influenced by it and some nice cross genre stuff has been getting on. Bassline/Niche is kinda like a crossover of Garage and Dubstep which is an interesting genre, except i generally find it too cheesy (although i think that's often the point). I'm really liking dubstep tracks that have hip-hop style MCing over the top, or even grime MCs. I also really dig dubstepy tracks that feel really housey, like have some hosey drums, and maybe some high synths in the mix. Check the track with Durrty Goodz rhyming over Bass Clef's "Cannot Be Straightened" track for a Hip Hop crossover that is fucken serious, and high on my playlist. Then the Kromestar ft Cessman track is a classic dubstep tune from 2006, with a mad fun drop. Also i'll do an extended part of this post that will include some Yozzie B tunes, which are more on a garagey, grimey, tech kinda tip, soon (his internet is a bit busted atm).

Another old school track which i still reckon is total awesome, and has to feature in a post on future beats, is a remix of Vyle (anyone heard of any good new releases by him, i thought "Oh I Think Dey Like Hoodtronics Vol.2 was due out ages ago?) by US bass legend, Drop The Lime (he's touring Oz April 4th at revolver, fuck yeah!). DTL has been into all forms of bass music for a long time, and always makes really interesting, and different choppy bangas. This remix he did of "Strobemouth" has been a favorite of mine for oh so long, there are so many cool elements in the track that i like. It's kinda relentless and ruff, has some cool vocals that are mega choppy, some bowl-destroying, thumping bass, and weird fidget-like drops. I've been wanting to post this track for a while, but have held off. But since it's now been out for ages, and has been posted a few other places, here it is on the scatterblog. It's a great example of dubstepy/grimey bass mixed with house music. Check out DTLs Curses alias for more dope stuff like this. Also check out this Bigstereo post for some of his remixes.

I hope all them beats have wet your appetite for some club bass anthems. If you were wondering about the pic up the top, that night is going on this Sunday 27th of Jan at Revolver. It's the day before the public holiday, cause of Australia Day, so hooray for party! Anyway me and Paz are playing from 2am till like 7am or so, we'll be playing back to back, Traktor vs Serato, who knows maybe we'll do some 4 decks versus style stuff. Buff Diss is doing his masking tape thang which will be a hoot of course. We got the main room stage too which should be fun. There's gonna be all types of fat bass tunes, and things kinda like in this post. If you wanna get on the door, MSG PAZ via his myspace for the password. Check out this post at Melbourne Beats for a bit of a blurb.

great post. i like the analysis in the introductory paragraphs. great tunes too. i've been playing thathijack remix for big dipper (the already one of the best of 2008) since december and not in lincolnshire, but right here in brasília, brazil.so there's an example of the global awareness you were talking about. shame globalization doesn't mean you can teletransport yourself to anywhere in the world. i sure would have liked to go to this party in melbourne.
